What Happens During a Pediatric Dental Appointment?

Pediatric dental exams and cleanings serve both preventative and diagnostic purposes. During your child’s appointment our team will provide a comprehensive oral exam. This is done to identify any unusual changes in the soft tissues of the mouth. We will conduct a visual inspection of the teeth to look for signs of tooth decay. We will evaluate the condition of the teeth, including teeth that have deep grooves. We will look for signs of inflammation in the gums indicating an infection. Moreover, our pediatric dentist will evaluate your child’s bite.

Every year or so, your child will have digital x-rays taken during their regular dental checkup. Digital x-rays expose your child to less radiation than traditional x-rays. They are also painless. The x-rays will be used to look for any problems in the jawbone, and to ensure that there are no cysts or tumors developing beneath the soft tissues of the mouth.

Your child will also have plaque removed from their teeth using specialized pediatric sized instruments. Their teeth will then be flossed and polished.

If your child’s mouth is free from tooth decay and infection, their appointment will be complete, and they should return in six months. However, if Dr. Kumar sees any teeth at risk of decay, or symptoms of demineralization, he may recommend dental sealants or fluoride treatments.

Dental sealants can help prevent most cavities. Dental sealants are applied to teeth that have deep grooves or crevices, such as the molars. The sealants are painless for your child.

Fluoride treatments are recommended for weakened teeth due to demineralization. Fluoride varnish is applied to the teeth in just seconds and is also completely painless.

If your child has developed cavities in their primary (baby) teeth, Dr. Kumar will evaluate the need for dental fillings. Because your child will ultimately loose the primary teeth, in some cases it may not be necessary to fill the teeth. In other cases, a filling may be recommended, to prevent your child from experiencing any pain.
